V unit (circuit breaker unit): Usually used at the incoming cabinet position, or as the outgoing cabinet with larger capacity and requiring short-circuit protection. It is the "master switch" and "safety guardian" of the entire Ring Main unit.

Unit D (Straight-through/Upgrading Unit): Usually located at the cable inlet end, it serves as the entry point for the main busbar or as a tie switch to connect two sections of the busbar. Sometimes it is also used to configure metering cabinets, providing installation space and connection points for metering equipment.

The fundamental distinction between them lies in the fact that the V unit has the ability to interrupt short-circuit currents, while the D unit does not.
If your circuit is required to withstand short-circuit faults, you must choose the V unit.
If all that is needed is to connect the cables or divide one power line into multiple ones, without the need for complex switch protection, the D unit is the most economical and efficient choice.

So, when you are looking at the system diagram of the solid cabinet, you can understand it this way: The V unit is the "active protection" and the D unit is the "passive connection". They each perform their own duties and together form a complete and reliable power distribution system.
