A VCB comprises three major structural assemblies: the vacuum interrupter, the operating mechanism, and the supporting frame with insulation.

The vacuum interrupter is the core functional unit. It contains fixed and moving contacts sealed inside a ceramic or glass envelope maintained at a high vacuum level (10⁻⁴ to 10⁻⁶ Pa). Its primary function is to extinguish the arc when contacts separate during fault conditions. The bellows allows axial movement of the moving contact while preserving the internal vacuum. A metallic shield surrounds the contacts to condense arc-generated metal vapor and prevent contamination of the insulating envelope.

The operating mechanism (spring, magnetic, or hydraulic type) provides the mechanical energy for closing and opening operations. It ensures rapid contact separation within milliseconds to clear faults efficiently. An insulated pull rod transmits motion from the mechanism to the moving contact.

The supporting frame offers rigid structural support and mounts porcelain or epoxy insulators that isolate live parts from ground. Primary terminals connect the interrupter to the external power circuit.

This integrated design delivers reliable interruption, long mechanical endurance, and minimal maintenance in medium-voltage distribution networks.
