What is Fixed Insulated Switchgear?

Fixed insulated Switchgear is a type of metal-enclosed electrical power distribution equipment in which all primary components—such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, and busbars—are permanently mounted in fixed positions within the cabinet. Unlike draw-out (removable) switchgear, these components cannot be withdrawn or interchanged, resulting in a simpler, more robust mechanical structure with lower manufacturing costs.

The term "insulated" refers to the dielectric medium used to isolate live parts. Common types include:

  • Air-insulated switchgear (AIS): Relies on natural air clearance and creepage distances.

  • Gas-insulated switchgear (Gis): Seals live parts in a stainless-steel tank filled with SF₆ or SF₆ mixture, offering compact size and high resistance to environmental contamination.

  • Solid-insulated switchgear (SIS): Encapsulates conductors in epoxy resin, eliminating phase-to-phase faults without using greenhouse gases.

All variants feature a fully enclosed grounded metal housing, providing high personnel safety (typically IP2X or higher) and protection against dust, moisture, and accidental contact.
