What is a GIS Gas-Insulated Switchgear?

A Gas-Insulated switchgear (GIS) is a compact, high-voltage electrical substation where nearly all live components—including circuit breakers, disconnectors, busbars, transformers, and lightning arresters—are enclosed within a sealed metal housing filled with sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) gas.

This gas serves as both an exceptional insulator and arc-quenching medium, enabling the equipment to operate reliably in a fraction of the space required by conventional air-insulated switchgear (AIS). Typically, GIS can reduce the footprint by up to 70–90%.

Its fully enclosed design makes it immune to environmental factors such as dust, humidity, salt spray, and temperature fluctuations, ensuring high operational stability and significantly loweRing Maintenance costs—with inspection intervals often extended to 10–20 years.
